| By Ann DeMatteo CROMWELL -- If you weren't too sure of it before, you certainly left the Miss Connecticut Christmas party on Sunday knowing one thing: Theresa "Tess" Beauchamp was royalty. Our beloved "Tess the Contessa" figuratively carried the Miss America crown on her head, daily living the four points of service, scholarship, style and success, before she was taken away from us on Oct. 2. There was not a dry eye in the house when photographs of her life flashed before us during a Power Point presentation. Scenes of her years of friendship and service in the pageant program, and from her joyful family life were shown. Members of her family, including husband Bernard Beauchamp, son Jeff Beauchamp, daughter Shelley Yerger and grandchildren, sat at the table of honor during the party. We all joined in song to wish Bernie a "Happy Birthday." Miss Connecticut Executive Director Luis Pabon also organized a floor show that highlighted the types of talent Tess loved -- ballet, tap and song. Emceed by Miss Connecticut Ashley Glenn, the show began with Miss Connecticut 1996 Stacy Perrone-Petta singing one of the Contessa's favorites, "And This is My Beloved." Next to perform a ballet was Acacia Courtney, first runner-up to Connecticut's Outstanding Teen. Her hometown favorite, Miss Connecticut 2007 Dana Daunis, showed off her pipes. Miss Connecticut's Outstanding Teen Rachael Ramonas, Miss New London County Kara Prete and Outstanding Teen semi-finalist Nancy Rivera also danced. The Miss Connecticut organization also will be naming an outstanding volunteer in honor of Tess at the state pageant in June. The nominees for award were brought forward: Lorraine Buonocore, Tracy Forbes, Nancy and Roger Picard, Bill and Sue Forte, Linda Marino and the late Theodora "Teddi" Howell. Thirty-five others also were called to the front of their room for their help with the pageant, and along with the above-mentioned group, all received volunteer pins in the shape of the state from Rachael and Ashley. Local Volunteers receive recognition at holiday party- Miss CT Board of Directors and ED Committee First in the life of Tess was service. Service to her family, her community, her church, the pageant and many other organizations. As the script of our presentation pointed out, Tess was not someone you said no to. That was how it was at home, with the pageant or when she was working on projects for some of her other philanthropic concerns, from St. Mary's Hospital, to the Torrington Symphony to the Watertown Town Hall restoration project to the local day care of which she was a board member. Tess ended up leading every organization she ever joined, and she worked her magic with a wink and a bat of the eye. That was part of the secret to her success. Tess was driven to make Miss Connecticut scholarships increase on a yearly basis. Her goal was for Miss Connecticut to receive $10,000, a goal she achieved in 2003 when she was named to the Miss America Academy of Honor and took home a scholarship in that amount. Tess, who was known nationwide because of her annual attendance at Miss America and because she had taken great pleasure in judging many states, had the idea that, on its 75th anniversary, Connecticut could take home the award. So, Tess jotted down a few ideas as to why she should win the award, and instructed her assistant, Ann DeMatteo, to expertly craft a letter of recommendation. To their surprise, Tess came home with the award that year. And who had more style than Tess? A former kindergarten teacher who trained youngsters for success, and a former dress shop owner who influenced customers and later was a mentor to our current wardrobe sponsor, Ragtime Boutique owner Natalie Testa, Tess had it all. We in the Miss Connecticut family sorely miss our Contessa, our shining star, now looking down upon us as we carry out her work. Photo Slideshow will open in seperate window |
