Announcing The 2013 Ann DeMatteo “Fighting Spirit” Memorial Scholarship Award
History: Ann DeMatteo was a MCSC volunteer for nearly three decades, serving in many different capacities from a Local Director to Contestant Recruiter, to The Board of Directors and more. She had a deep love for the Miss America Organization and felt great pride for the work she had done for us, but most especially, Ann loved the young women who participated in the program.
Her efforts had always been to provide the best experiences for all of our contestants, at the local, state, and national level. Ann fought and won her first battle with Breast Cancer in 2008, and when the disease returned, she was determined to fight even harder.
Ultimately Ann’s body left us, but her fighting spirit remains. It is this very characteristic, the ability to always keep fighting, to get up and get going, to recognize that you may not always be the best, but that you can accomplish more than you hoped for by facing life’s challenges with everything you’ve got, that we hope to recognize with this special award.
There will be awards given to the Miss and the Outstanding Teen who each prove to best possess the courage and conviction of the “Fighting Spirit” that enables us all to face the challenges of life with faith despite the fear, and love despite the loneliness.
